J. Mayer H. Transforms 18th-Century Lake Como Villa with Bold Modern Design
German architectural firm J. Mayer H., renowned for its iconic Metropol Parasol project in Seville, Spain, has recently unveiled a stunning renovation of an 18th-century villa on the shores of Lake Como. The historic property has been revitalized with a blend of modern design elements and an eclectic color scheme, seamlessly integrating the old with the new.
While the villa's original facade has been preserved, subtle refinements such as adjusted window frames have enhanced its structural integrity. The exterior remains true to its historical roots, with the original color scheme largely intact, complemented by the addition of contemporary awnings and green shutters that breathe new life into the timeless architecture.
The villa's garden underwent a complete transformation, featuring new regional green stones surrounding the pool area, which now showcases a striking Tony Matelli sculpture. Additionally, an all-new dock has been constructed to accommodate larger boats, enhancing the villa's lakefront appeal. The grotto, a significant part of the estate, has been redesigned with cave-inspired showers and changing rooms, along with a serene fountain filled with water lilies and fish.
Inside the villa, the architects have retained existing surfaces and built-in furniture, preserving the villa's historical character. However, the interiors have been refreshed with monochromatic paint schemes that give each room a sleek, modern look while emphasizing the villa's centuries-old patina. Lakefront rooms feature lighter colors that harmonize with the deep-blue hues of Lake Como, while other areas are painted in darker tones to create tranquil, introspective spaces.
In a notable artistic touch, Parisian painter Matthieu Cossé designed mirrored ceilings in two corner rooms— the kitchen and the study— adding a reflective, contemporary twist to the villa's historical ambiance.
